My Ideal Kailash Yatra

The most overlooked thing which can kill your Kailash dream or can even risk your life –

You may need to know this even before you plan your Yatra – you may read this later but it may already be too late

The challenges of kailash yatra and its planning & preparation is often the most overlooked thing which can kill your Kailash dream or can even risk your life.

This sounds sad but I have a good news for all the Shiva devotees, nature lovers and adventure souls – there are certain techniques that anyone can follow and become very well planned and prepared.

With the right technique and right support, anyone can dream of a successful, safe and comfortable yatra. It is absolutely possible. People do not have to fall victim of biased information, or incomplete information or cheat from unethical agents or companies and their illegall activities.

As a Hindu, we all believe that Kailash is heaven on earth and is a gateway to MUKTI of your soul. All previous yatries tell us that the place is so beautiful that it naturally inspires feeling of liberation.

But, as a Hindu, we also have been told that a path to God’s home is not filled with luxury but is full of challenges.

If so, then what are the challenges of Kailash Yatra?

This is where you need the most factual, most unbiased and a complete set of information. Lot of the agents and companies don’t give you the entire information. They even tell you lies because they want you to book with them as soon as possible.

These agents or companies often do not understand all the risks themselves or do not prepare for it and hence the yatries get into all sorts of trouble which we get to hear or read on internet.

So, how can you avoid such traps and instead have a successful yatra? There is only two things that are critical to this:

i)       awareness and

ii)      right team and proper support

Research shows that the people who are aware will plan and prepare better. This will lead to their success. It is also a common sense that when you are aware, you can not be cheated or fooled.

There is one thing that is critical to your awareness – without this, the awareness does not mean anything. This critical thing is the quality of information. It is very important that the information you receive is unbiased, factual and complete.

Gathering all our knowledge and experience, we have prepared a 10 POINT AWARENESS pack for our clients. We are happy to share top 5 points of these awareness with you here to help you make better decision on Kailash yatra.

If you feel like you don’t want to miss out on such critical information full of unbiased and factual information, then please read below article NOW by clicking on the link.

My Kailash Yatra Awareness

Top 5 facts about Kailash Yatra you must know before making your decision

The factual truth about Kailash Yatra that you won’t hear from agents or find on internet are very important for you to know to make your decision and to commit to the yatra.

To overcome all your negative thoughts about the yatra, you must get factual and unbiased information to increase your awareness which will empower you to commit to the yatra and take action to fulfil your dream.

The fact is that there are more confusion and doubt out there about Kailash Yatra than there is factual information available. This is why so many people hesitate to take action and can never fulfil their life-long Kailash dream.

Consider High altitude in this context.

Do you know why high alitutde travel is a big deal? Why travelling to high altitude is so difficult?

Can you image what level of difiiculty it gets when you reach a height of 5700m?

FACT No. 1 –  High Altitude

At 5700m altitude, it becomes very hard to even take one step at a time. Every step feels heavy and you will be stopping after almost each step to take a breathe. It feels very uncomfortable, very difficult.

Majority of people we talk to do not know where Kailash and Mansarovar lies and how high it is above the sea level.

Mansarovar lake is in remote parts of Tibet. This area is the core of the Himalayan mountain range which is the longest and highest in the world. Mansarovar lake is at an altitude of about 4500m above the sea level.

You need to know that human body starts to feel the altitude effect from roughly the height of 2800m. This means Mansarovar lake is much higher above this point and hence precaution needs to be taken on how you are approaching to this high altitude.

The good news is that human body can adopt to the thin oxygen in the high altitude if allowed extra time to adjust. This process is called acclimatisation.

We follow the guidelines of acclimatisation practice in the Himalayan region and design the itinerary accordingly. All our tour operation plan is structured keeping the acclimatisation in mind.

Another good news is that there is a road access all the way up to Mansarovar lake so you don’t need to walk up to this place.

Mt. Kailash is little bit further from Mansarovar lake. You have to walk for 3 days to circle the mountain. While on this parikrama walk, you will get to the highest point called Dolma-La-pass at an altitude of about 5700m.

This is very high altitude and lot of things need to be considered when travelling to such high altitude from your health and wellbeing perspective.  We talk about this in our planning section.

To cope well with high altitude there are top 3 things to do that probably make 80% of difference

  • Exercise/yoga
  • What to eat/drink or avoid
  • Technique of walking in the parikrama

TIPS

  • It is very important that you talk to your doctor about your intention to travel to such high altitude. Mention specifically about the altitude of Mansarovar and Parikrama. Check with your doctor if you health condition is suitable to travel there. We talk about some of the concerning health conditions in our planning section.

  • If in doubt or have certain health condition that prevent you from travelling to extremely high altitude, then consider going only up to Mansarovar and not doing the Parikrama. Afterall, it is believed that snan in Mansarovar lake (these days Chinese authorities ban from taking dip in the lake but you are provided with a bucket of water to bath) and parikrama of Yama Dwar (starting point of the parikrama walk and bus goes up to this point) will cleanse your soul in this life-time.

  • There are certain exercises and yogas you can do which will enhance your lung capacity to breathe deeply so you can inhale more oxygen in the high altitude without having to exhaust your body. We provide a well formulated exercise regime which will help you in both effective parikrama walk and and to tackle high altitude.

  • drinking plenty of water and other fluid, taking energy bars, avoiding alcohol, avoiding hard-to-digest food will help maintain your health and well-being in high altitude

  • if you adopt to walk and rest, walk and rest approach it will help you to manage your breathing and oxygen intake which is very important in high altitude. We teach this as part of our service to get you prepared.

FACT No. 2 – Remoteness

Mansarovar lake and Kailash mountain are in the remoteness of harsh Geographical conditions of the Himalayas in Tibet.

Medical facilities like a hospital are almost not found in the area. We rely on an operational excellence model put in place based on many years of experience in handling adventure treks in the Himalayas on both sides of Nepal and Tibet. We talk about this more later on.

FACT No. 3 – Walking

      – only applicable if you are planning to do Parikrama walk. There is road access

           up to Mansarovar lake

Does your health and fitness allow you to travel to high altitude of about 5700m and can you walk over 8 hours one day going both up and down the hill? This is really what you need to work out with your doctor and by assessing your own health condition.

Walking itself is not so long and so technical but what makes it so challenging is that it is at a very high altitude where the level of oxygen is so thin that every step and every breath becomes heavier and heavier and forces you to take rest (on 2nd day when reaching to the highest point at Dolma-la-pass). During our planning and preparation session, we help everyone to practice high altitude walking and breathing.

To give you a sense of amount of walking, first day will be about 5 hours on flatter ground, and 3rd day is about 4 hours on a flatter ground where as the 2nd days is the hardest which requires about 9 hours of walk up and down the hill in the high altitude.

Pony ride on Parikrama

Yes, you can hire a pony but they are expensive (about U$300 to 400). This is charged separately from the tour package by the local Tibetan vendors in the area. Please remember these vendors will not refund the money once booked, even if you did not like the pony ride.

Pony ride is not very comfortable, but it helps because you don’t need to walk. Our observation is that even on pony, you still need to be able to walk a little bit as the pony may throw you off its back while coming back down a hill through steep decends.

Our staff provide assistance in making decision at the trekking start point and to hire a pony if needed.

FACT No. 4 – Weather condition

Weatherwise, best season to do this Yatra is anytime between May and Sep. In terms of general weather, during this period, there is no snow, sun comes up during the day and makes travelling to this region possible.

During the day, the temperature can be around 17 to 22 degree and in the evening and morning it will be very cold. The most popular months that people prefer to book are June and September as temperature is warmer than other months and has less chances of rain.

In other months, the place is covered in snow and is too cold to travel.

Having said this, the weather remains unpredictable in the area at any time. Hence, we need to prepare ourselves for all type of weather conditions – rain, wind, and cold. We talk about this more in planning section.

In our tips for preparation, we will advise you what items to pack, what to wear and when/where during the yatra.

FACT No. 5 – Facilities

In Mansarovar and beyond – along the walking trail, there are only basic accommodations. Facilities are basic. Kailash is in a very remote corner of Tibet. When you get there, you will have the sense of this and an appreciation to the place and facility that is there – which comes from an appreciation that what is there is much better than not having any facility at all.

This will remind you of the strong pilgrimage belief that a journey to the home of God is never meant to be easy.

The rooms and bed/beddings are clean and comfortable. When very busy, You will have to share rooms with 3 to 4 fellow yatries just for several nights around the parikrama because there are very limited accommodation options for so many people in the busy months.

This is how it is and not something we can improve. When you get there you will realise that getting a place to sleep is in itself a blessing in such a remote and harsh natural conditions in Tibet.

You get all the luxury/comfort in Kathmandu and enjoy the spring  – summer time perfect to enjoy your stay.

You will also have luxury of getting your china visa and Tibet permit all organised by us, thus the difficult and tricky part being covered by us. You will have a guide(s) for the whole tour, porter/vehicle and mule carrying your luggage, a cook making and serving fresh Indian vegetable meals every day and taking good care of your health and wellbeing during the yatra.

This is the luxury you are going to get.

The local Tibetan people won’t have English ability and their cultural and way of life will mean it will be difficult to interact with them. You will also appreciate the level of dedication our staff from Nepal show and the hard work and service they put in to make your life easier and to ensure your health and wellbeing is well maintained throughout the yatra maximising your chances of successfully completing the yatra and returning home safely.

The facilities get down to basic as we move from Saga in Tibet towards Mansarovar and then onwards on the Parikrama trek.

The journey towards God’s home starts to move away from material pleasures as you get closer it really start to test you, and your devotion to God. You will not be able to take shower everyday or wash clothes around here as the weather gets really cold, facilities basic and hot water rare. Hence in our preparation guide, we advise to take enough pair of clothes.

To make your planning and preparing easy, once you make commitment to the yatra and book with us, we will provide you a comprehensive list of every single item to pack, how many of which clothes to pack, what to buy in Kathmandu e.g. your puja items, etc, we advise you info every detail even about what electricity type connection are used in Nepal and Tibet.

Obtaining this level of detailed information, support and help in preparation makes your life easy, gives you peace of mind and saves plenty of time otherwise you will be spending on internet on researching and often getting confused from contradicting information you find online.

The electricity is there everywhere even at Mansarovar and Kailash Parikrama area.

Communicationwise, there are facilities but services turned off by Chinese government for their sense of security in the Tibetan region. To our clients, we will advise what can be done as a workaround so you can stay in touch with your family back home.

This is the end of 5 points awareness information. As mentioned in previous page, we have a comprehensive 10 points Awareness pack.

If you decide to book with us, we will give you our full 10 points factual info Pack for your complete awareness.

So it is fair to everyone, you get free information and yatries who show faith in us and take step to commit, we provide extra awareness help as part of our committment in return.

As such, this organisation strongly advocates the need for peoples’ participation as future stewards to attain long-term conservation goals.  As the Nepalese Partner of BirdLife International, a network of more than 110 organisations around the world, BCN also works on a worldwide agenda to conserve the world’s birds and their habitats.

BCN welcomes anyone to become a life long member and choose a favourite bird from the protected bird list for sponsorship.
